Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Interior’s traffic accident statistics for 2024 have revealed that sudden swerving was the leading cause of road accidents in the UAE, accounting for 827 incidents. Distractions while driving followed closely, with 776 accidents attributed to various forms of driver distraction.

The ministry’s report identifies a total of 66 distinct causes contributing to traffic accidents.

Other causes

In addition to swerving and distraction, negligence and inattention led to 455 accidents across the country. Abu Dhabi recorded 77 such incidents, while Dubai saw 241, Sharjah 44, Ajman 27, Umm Al Quwain 19, Ras Al Khaimah 35, and Fujairah 12.

The analysis said accidents were also caused by failure to ensure the road is clear before entering a street, jumping red lights, ignoring pedestrian right-of-way, speeding without accounting for road conditions, driving against traffic, reversing without checking the rearview and disregarding traffic signs.
