Ezra Miller has resurfaced in the public eye with a rare interview, in which he discussed his return to Hollywood and addressed his brief, headline-making appearance at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The actor stepped onto the red carpet for the first time in two years during the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival in Cagliari, Italy, on Thursday. Speaking to Italian outlet Lo Speciale Giornale, as quoted by PageSix, Miller admitted that his current connection with the film industry is “on tentative grounds.”

Miller, who faced multiple legal issues in 2022, also spoke about his blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance at the Cannes premiere of Die, My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsey. Rather than stopping for the press line, he sprinted across it.

“I came to Cannes to support one of my closest friends in the world who is Lynne Ramsey — who I think is one of the greatest living filmmakers,” he said, referencing Ramsey, who previously directed them in 2011’s We Need to Talk About Kevin.

He added, “I’d say on tentative grounds,” when describing his current relationship with cinema.

Miller also revealed he is co-writing a yet-untitled film with Ramsey. “That will likely be the first thing I do,” they noted regarding their professional return. “I’ve been writing a lot, because you can do that in solitude,” Miller continued. “Which has been friendly to me.”

Despite Cannes being a challenging moment of re-entry, Miller said he would “do anything” for Ramsey, even if the festival environment proved intense.

“If you’ve been in the woods for three years, I do not recommend going straight to Cannes, where every photographer and every weirdo will be there, you know what I mean?”

Miller’s public presence had been minimal since their string of legal troubles in 2022, which began with two arrests in Hawaii. The first stemmed from separate incidents at a karaoke bar in March, for which he pled no contest. Soon after, two residents filed a restraining order against Miller, alleging harassment and threats. That order was later dropped.

In April, Miller was arrested again, this time for second-degree assault, after allegedly throwing a chair that struck a woman at a private gathering.

June 2022 brought more controversy. One parent accused Miller of grooming their child from the age of 12. Another claimed Miller “menaced their family one evening in their downstairs neighbor’s home and acted inappropriately toward” a 12-year-old child. No charges were filed.

Later, Miller addressed the claims publicly, stating: “I have been unjustly and directly targeted by an individual who the facts have shown has a history of such manipulative and destructive action.”

That same month, reports emerged alleging Miller was housing a mother and her three children at a Vermont farm under unsafe conditions. By August, Miller told authorities the family hadn’t lived there for months.
