The upgraded ePassport features a polycarbonate data page
St. Kitts and Nevis has earned regional acclaim after its newly enhanced biometric ePassport was named the “Best New Passport” at the High Security Printing (HSP) Latin America conference earlier in June this year. The award recognises innovation in government-issued documents and marks a major milestone for the twin-island Federation in advancing its border and identity systems.
The upgraded ePassport features a polycarbonate data page designed to be tamper-resistant and long-lasting, alongside multiple layers of embedded anti-counterfeit technologies.
According to officials, the design and production of the passport align fully with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, allowing for secure and seamless interoperability with global border systems.
The introduction of the new passport also follows the implementation of the ePassport Issuing Control System (ePICS), a comprehensive digital platform developed in partnership with the Canadian Bank Note Company (CBN), which has been a long-standing partner of the government. This secure system enhances the process of issuing passports, ensuring traceability and tighter identity controls.
Officials describe the transition to the biometric ePassport as part of a broader push toward a more secure and digitally integrated border management system.
The international recognition underscores St. Kitts and Nevis’ serious approach to national security, as well as its capacity to lead on complex global standards despite its small size. The government sources noted that robust due diligence procedures are integrated across all immigration pathways, supporting the passport's credibility and reinforcing trust with international partners.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew stated that the award is a powerful affirmation of country’s commitment to safeguarding the identity of the citizens.
“This award is a powerful affirmation of our commitment to safeguarding the identity of our citizens and upholding the highest international security standards. As we modernise our systems, we are not only investing in cutting-edge technology, we are reinforcing global trust in St. Kitts and Nevis,” Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew.
St. Kitts and Nevis’ passport advancements reflect more than technological progress, they are grounded in the nation’s long-standing commitment to integrity within its immigration systems. While the passport itself stands as a symbol of security and innovation, it is backed by rigorous due diligence procedures that govern all channels of entry into the country.
The St. Kitts and Nevis Government has rolled out an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system, streamlining the entry process for eligible travellers and incorporating facial biometric technology and a fast-track arrival option.
The HSP award, given in the “Regional ID Document of the Year” category, places the Federation at the forefront of secure document innovation in the Caribbean. Analysts say the win signals the country’s strategic intent to maintain a high standard in identity protection, digital governance, and border resilience.
With this achievement, St. Kitts and Nevis joins a small group of nations recognised not just for the strength of their passports, but for the integrity and foresight embedded in their national identity systems.
